Pilates is a movement system
developed over a hundred years ago by Joseph Pilates who had developed
exercises to optimise his own health. He expanded his ideas and
developed a whole system incorporating many different movement
philosophies from around the world.
In the 21st Century Pilates is synonymous with core stability however his system challenges many areas of fitness; flexibility, strength, co-ordination, stamina, core control. Joseph Pilates was ahead of his time and he was very aware the impact your physical health can have on your mental wellbeing and vice versa. He believed his system, originally called Contrology, if followed diligently, would have a profound effect on an individual’s physical, mental and spiritual health.
Pilates is much more than a series of ‘gentle’ exercises performed on the mat. There are studio pieces of equipment developed to challenge the body in many different ways from the beginner to the very advanced student. I teach individual sessions in the studio, which includes the equipment and the mat, and classes on the mat with occasional use of small equipment.
